To boost sustainable energy in the country, the Indian government has finally rolled out the much-awaited Hydrogen Certification Scheme. The scheme was launched by the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) with the vision of shifting the Indian economy towards clean and clear gas usage.
The main plan is to introduce the replacement of fuels especially Petroleum, Diesel, coal, etc into the Indian market. To fight rising pollution, global warming, & other threats that are rising from consuming these fuels.
The hydrogen certification scheme will provide you with the certificate to sell the green hydrogen legally into the country. Additionally, there are several other incentives that will be provided to you on a regular basis. Hence, if you want to start any business then you should consider this scheme once.

What is Green Hydrogen?
Green Hydrogen is a type of Hydrogen produced by renewable energy sources i.e. Solar, Wind, and Electrolysis of Water. This the nature-friendly because, unlike any other types of hydrogen, it does not produce a green greenhouse effect in its emission. Hence, making it clean, clear, and environment-friendly gas to operate on.
The Hydrogen Certification scheme is proof in itself of India’s dedication to shifting the sustainable energy future. If you know the methods of producing green hydrogen then just apply for the scheme and get unbounded help from the government to certify and boost your business.
International Demand
Currently, not only India but the whole world is shifting towards sustainable resources. For this several countries are promoting their citizens and businesses to use green hydrogen as a fuel rather than any non-renewable energy sources.
Since the business is very new so not very big players are there to fulfill the need for Green Hydrogen. If the quality standards for the production meet the government criteria then the producers can easily get access to the world market. This is because the certificate has been accredited with the international standards. This will open the whole new export opportunities.
Benefits of the Green Hydrogen Certification Scheme
Why you should go for this scheme. Since you have to make investments the returns are highly expected as the Government of India, itself is promoting this scheme. Ready to back the producers in almost every situation, it is a big game-changer for the following reasons.
- Producers will receive incentives regularly.
- They can sell green hydrogen in any part of India.
- Exemptions & concessions on the profit earned.
- They can also export Green Hydrogen in outer countries with null taxes.
Points to Keep in Mind Before Certification
- The Carbon emission should not exceed 2kg in producing 1kg of hydrogen for the last 12 months.
- There are only 2 certified ways to produce green hydrogen without producing much carbon dioxide, the 1st one is electrolysis (the process of breaking water molecules in H2 & O2), and the 2nd one is Biomass conversion.
- You must have a proper production facility for water treatment, electrolysis, gas purifications, Drying and compressing, & on-site storage facility.
How is the Verification to be Done Under the Hydrogen Certification Scheme?
Planning to get registered as a producer under this scheme then there are some tick marks you must have to complete for it.
- First and foremost, as a producer, you must hire any Accredited Carbon Verification (ACV) recognized by the Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE).
- The process will ensure that producers of green hydrogen are generating it maintaining the emission and compliances.
- It will be done with an on-site assessment, and after passing it the reports will be submitted for further verification on the green hydrogen portal.
Multi-Tier Certification Process
- Concept Stage- An optional certificate to the producer will be issued once it has completed the submission of reports on the portal ACV.
- Facility Level Certificate– Under this level, the certificate will be issued on commissioning, hence testifying that the emission produced for manufacturing of green hydrogen is under the limit.
- Provisional Certificate– This certificate is given after one month of completing the production of green hydrogen, after testing the quality and quantity of hydrogen produced, this certificate is issued.
- Final Certificate– After completing all the above certifications, this is the last certificate that is awarded to the green hydrogen producer, certifying that the green hydrogen is completely fit for sale in the domestic market. This certificate is issued after completing a 1-year of time period.
Conclusion- Green Hydrogen Scheme
The Green Hydrogen Certification scheme is a stamp that shows how much India is striving towards achieving the goal of renewable sources of energy. By defining standards and a tough certification process, the producers that will be passing this certificate will be one of the most reliable green hydrogen producers in the world.
They can export the green hydrogen to other states of India as well as other countries. This will not only ensure the smooth shifting of India from non-renewable to renewable sources of energy but also ensure its proper availability in the market. No doubt, India will be a key player in defining the robust green hydrogen ecosystem of the world.
