This State Government Has Announced Housing Scheme 2nd Installment for Under-priviledged

In order to enhance the livelihood of under-priviledged and strengtening them, West Bengal government under the leadership of Mamta Banarjee has launched Banglar Bari Yojana. Almost 16 lakhs poor people, who does not have their own house will get benefits from this scheme. These beneficieries set to receive aid in two installments, the 1st one has already been disimbursed in December 2025, whereas the 2nd one is set for the May 2026.

This announcement of disimbursing the 2nd installment was announced by the Chief Minister of West Bengal herself on X (formerly Twitter). Talking about how this scheme has changed lives of lakhs of poor people living in the state and now they can own their shelter, and live rest of their life in dignity.

Banglar Bari Yojana- A Housing Scheme for Needy

In aligned with the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana, which was one of the flagship scheme by the central government focused on mainly providing shelter to the needy. In order to extend this helping to the Bengali Citizen, and provide shelter who has been left out in the central government scheme, this Banglar Bari Yojana has been launched.

Over the past decades, the state government has prioritized the housing schemes under the rural and urban development program. The scheme will nourish the under-priviledged in many manner, not just by providing shelter to them but also by uplifting their standard of living. As per the official West Bengal Government data, around 16 lakh families will be the beneficieries of this scheme.

How Disbursement will be Managed for Banglar Bari Yojana

The 1st installment of this scheme was meant to build up the initiation process for the construction of home. Procurement of land, purchasing the basic construction materials, & other basic things required for building a house was being covered in the 1st installment of the scheme

Whereas in the 2nd installment, the main focus will be to ramp up the work which was initiated. Under this scheme, all the basic requirements like roof, plumbing, walls, washrooms, & other basic component of a house has to be covered. As per the data, each house constructing under this scheme will cost government around Rs 1.2 Lakhs to Rs 2 Lakh. The variation is because of the region (urban/rural), size, & previously available amenities.

The fund disbursed will directly be transferred into the beneficiary account via Direct Bank Transfer (DBT) ensuring transparency and minimum corruption.

How the Beneficiaries are Chosen for this Scheme

The name of the beneficiaries will be decided by the Department of Panchayats & Rural Development for the rural applicants whereas for the urban areas, the responsibilities of this scheme is on the shoulder of Urban Development and Municipal Affairs. A Block Development Officers (BDO) is appointed by the government body in order to verify the details of applicants and who are eligible for it.

Also, there is special focus given to some of the marginalized communities, disabled people, families affected by natural calamities and family governed by women of the states. The house made will have the following

  1. A Living Room
  2. A Kitchen
  3. Toilet (covered under Swachh Bharat Mission)
  4. Proper Water Management Facilities
  5. Electricity Connection (covered under Saubhagya Scheme)

How will the Banglar Bari Yojana Beneficial for West Bengal

First of all, this housing scheme will be most beneficial to those 16 lakh families who were either forced to sleep in open or they have to pay rent. After getting their own home, they are not binded to pay the monthly rent, which will add onto their monthly savings, through which they can enhance their living standards.

Since, this large number of houses being constructed all over the state then the demand for the skilled and unskilled labour will increase drastically hence providing them with the job opportunity. From local masons to labourers, all will get a regular source of income for at least a time period of 2 years.

Additionally, it will also enhance the local economy who sells the construction materials. This will boost the Small & Medium businesses across the state. No doubt, it is one of the best scheme to be launched by any state governments of India but there are also hurdles ahead of it. Some of them are

  1. Selecting the Effective Beneficiaries for the scheme
  2. Timely Getting Funds from governement to finish the work which has started.
  3. Good quality of construction material used to make the house.
  4. See, if there is not any money corruption in name of the scheme.

Since our central government pledge “Housing for All by 2026”, so moving forward into this direction, the West Bengal government has tried to provide shelter to the most needy people of the state. If properly managed and implemented then it is not wrong to say that this scheme will be one of the most successful scheme in the history of West Bengal.
